Poor people suffer physical pain that comes with too little food and long hours of work; emotional pain stemming from the daily humiliations of dependency and lack of power; and the moral pain from being forced to make choices such as whether to pay to save the life of an ill family member or to use the money to feed their children.

WOMEN’S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AND INCLUSIVE GROWTH

Kabeer, N. Women’s economic empowerment and inclusive growth: Labour markets and enterprise development, London, SOAS, 2012. This paper was commissioned by DFID and IDRC with a view to locating the growing concern with women’s economic empowerment within its growth research programmes. Inclusive growth, as defined by IDRC, is growth which ensures opportunities for all sections of the population, with a special emphasis on the poor, particularly women and young people, who are most likely to be marginalised. Central to both IDRC’s and DFID’s agenda is a concern with decent jobs and the promotion of small and medium enterprise.

Adolescent Girls in Disaster & Conflict: Interventions for Improving Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services is a collection of UNFPA supported humanitarian interventions for reaching adolescents when crisis heightens vulnerability to gender-based violence, HIV infection, early and forced marriage and other risks.

PLAN INTERNATIONAL ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN CRISIS: EXPERIENCES OF RISK AND RESILIENCE ACROSS THREE HUMANITARIAN SETTINGS

Adolescent Girls in Crisis is a research project informed by and centered upon the voices and experiences of girls in three of the world’s most troubled and volatile locations: South Sudan, the Lake Chad Basin and the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh.

CARE THE POWER TO LEAD: A LEADERSHIP MODEL FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS

This paper was developed to help guide CARE’s leadership model for girls in Power Within. It provides a literature review of definitions and approaches to girls’ education and leadership development. In addition to the literature review, expert informant interviews were conducted to develop a working definition of leadership and identify leadership competencies, and the findings are presented. Finally, this paper outlines the process of reflection that was undertaken once a definition of leadership for young adolescent girls had been developed. Using CARE’s gender empowerment framework to develop a theory of change, a girl’s leadership model was developed that values the role primary school education has in a girls’ life at this age, as well as her ability to interact in structured activities that build her leadership skills.

WRC “WORKING TO IMPROVE OUR OWN FUTURES”: INCLUSION OF WOMEN AND GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION

The Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) project Strengthening the capacity of networks of women with disabilities on humanitarian issues, supports organizations of women with disabilities to advocate on humanitarian issues at national, regional, and global levels. A global mapping identified and documented the role of organizations of women with disabilities in humanitarian response, and effective strategies for the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in humanitarian and post-conflict programs.

HUMANITY & INCLUSION. GENDER AND DISABILITY INTERSECTIONALITY IN PRACTICE: WOMEN AND GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES ADDRESSING DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE IN AFRICA

The nine good practices presented in this report are for most part led by women with disabilities at grassroots level. Good practices were collected and selected in collaboration with the Technical Advisory Committee members, whose expertise and networks have been critical in the project’s success. In six countries from the African continent, Making It Work good practice holders have demonstrated through their actions, the very urgent need to address the intersection of gender and disability.

Inter-Agency Standing Committee. 2015. Guidelines for Integrating Gender-Based Violence Interventions in Humanitarian Action: Reducing risk, promoting resilience and aiding recovery. The purpose of these Guidelines is to assist humanitarian actors and communities affected by armed conflict, natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies to coordinate, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate essential actions for the prevention and mitigation of gender-based violence (GBV) across all sectors of humanitarian response.

CAMP MANAGEMENT TOOLKIT

Applicable to both IDP and refugee scenarios, the Toolkit incorporates a wide range of relevant information on managing displaced populations living in communal settings (collective centres, spontaneous sites, established camps, etc.). Large scale displacements caused by recent conflict and natural disaster events have created a high demand for the Toolkit, which has proven an invaluable resource for field practitioners, government actors and displaced populations since its original release in 2004. CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN (CEDAW)

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women. Consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, it defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination.

NRC KAMPALA CONVENTION: MAKE IT WORK FOR WOMEN

This report makes recommendations on how to improve this protection for displaced women and girls, with a focus on housing, land and property rights. It offers four ways that governments can meet their obligations for displaced women by enforcing existing national laws and implementing legal reforms to comply with the convention.

WRC & IRC (2015) “I see that it is possible”: Building capacity for disability inclusion in gender-based violence programming. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a widely recognized human rights and public health concern, affecting at least one in three women globally. GBV may become even more pervasive in crisis situations, where social, community and institutional protection mechanisms are often weakened or destroyed. Men and boys are also vulnerable to violence during conflict and displacement, particularly sexual violence, though to a lesser extent than women and girls.

CARE SUPPORTING RESILIENCE IN SYRIA – WOMEN’S EXPERIENCES OF CONFLICT AND THE ‘NEW NORMAL'

The report analyses how Syrian women have adopted new livelihood strategies, new ways of accessing education, and new gender roles. It also makes recommendations for how donors, as well as humanitarian and development agencies, should promote women’s leadership in humanitarian and early recovery responses, supporting a platform for Syrian women to define their own priorities, shape the support they receive, and make decisions for themselves and their dependents.
